Stalactite caves

Discover fascinating underground worlds.

The Harz Mountains are home to some of the most spectacular stalactite caves in Germany. The underground worlds in the Rübeländer cave system have fascinated visitors for over 300 years.

Baumann's Cave

The Baumannshöhle is the oldest show cave in Germany - visitors have been guided through the underground halls here since 1646. The highlight is the Goethe Hall, a huge hall with impressive stalagmites and stalactites. Goethe himself visited the cave three times. Guided tours start every 20 minutes, group sizes up to 40 people.

Hermann's Cave

The Hermannshöhle is a river cave with halls up to 50 meters high. The crystal chamber with its filigree calcite crystals is famous. Unique in Germany: the cave is home to grotto olms (Proteus anguinus), blind salamanders that are otherwise only found in Slovenian caves. Hermann's Cave reopens on March 28, 2026 after the winter break.

Iberg dripstone cave

The Iberg Stalactite Cave is located near Bad Grund - a complete experience consisting of a cave, museum and light trail through the forest. The adjoining museum displays a 3,000-year-old Bronze Age family whose DNA has been analyzed. The combination of nature and science makes this place particularly interesting for families.

Good to know

A constant temperature of around 8°C prevails in all caves - a jacket is mandatory even in summer. Dogs and photography are not permitted in the Rübeland Caves. The caves are partially barrier-free - please enquire in advance if you have any restrictions.
