Observe lynxes

Germany's largest lynx population lives in the Harz National Park. The shy big cats were successfully reintroduced in 2000 - today around 90 animals roam the Harz forests. The lynx is the largest cat in Europe and a symbol of the successful return of the wild to the Harz Mountains.

Lynx enclosure at the Rabenklippe

The safest way to see lynx up close is at the lynx enclosure at the Rabenklippe near Bad Harzburg. The show enclosure in the national park is home to several lynxes in a near-natural forest enclosure. You can observe the animals particularly well during the daily feedings (Wednesday and Saturday, times depend on the season).

Lynx trail

The lynx trail is a themed hiking trail that provides fun information about the life of lynxes in the national park. You can learn all about the behavior, hunting and habitat of the big cats over a distance of around 6 kilometers. The trail starts at the Rabenklippe parking lot and leads through the forest to the show enclosure.

Lynxes in the wild

Observing lynx in the wild is rare and requires patience. The best chances are at dusk in quiet forest areas. National park rangers offer guided tours where you can learn to read lynx tracks - paw prints, scratch marks on trees and cracks on prey.

The Harz lynx project coordinates the reintroduction and monitoring of the population. On the website luchsprojekt-harz.de you will find current sightings and information on the conservation program.
