With a steam locomotive through the mystical Harz Forest.
The Harz Narrow-Gauge Railways (HSB) operate Germany’s longest continuous narrow-gauge rail network. With 25 steam locomotives, 12 diesel locomotives, and 137 passenger cars, they offer a unique travel experience along 140 kilometers of track.
Three Lines, One Experience
The network consists of three lines:
Brockenbahn: The most famous route runs from Drei Annen Hohne to the Brocken, which stands at 1,141 meters. The trip takes just under an hour and climbs about 600 meters in elevation.
Harzquerbahn: Connects Wernigerode in the north with Nordhausen in the south—across the entire Harz Mountains. Total distance: approximately 60 kilometers.
Selketalbahn: The most romantic route runs through the tranquil Selke Valley, past Falkenstein Castle.
Nostalgic Travel
Some of the steam locomotives are over 100 years old and are lovingly maintained. The hiss of the steam locomotive, the smell of coal, and the rhythmic clatter on the narrow-gauge tracks transport you to another era. Especially atmospheric: a ride through the snow-covered Harz Forest in winter.
Starting Point: Osterode
From the Lindnerhof, you can reach the nearest HSB station in Elend or Drei Annen Hohne in about 30–45 minutes by car. From there, trains depart regularly for the Brocken and through the Harz Mountains.
Tickets and Planning
Online tickets for regular trains can be booked 3–4 weeks in advance. On weekends and during school breaks, popular routes sell out quickly—it’s worth planning ahead.
