The Harz Mountains were one of the most important mining regions in Europe for over 1,000 years. Silver, lead, zinc and copper were mined here - the region's wealth was based on what lay beneath the ground. Today you can experience this history up close in impressive show mines.

Rammelsberg near Goslar

The Rammelsberg mine is the best-known UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been in continuous operation for over 1,000 years. Various guided tours show different eras: The Roeder gallery takes you through the historic water wheel system from the 18th century. The mine train takes you deep into the mountain, past original mining sites. The ore processing plant shows how raw rock was turned into concentrate.

Opening times: April-October 9:00-18:00, November-March 9:00-17:00 (last tour 16:30 or 15:30). Closed December 24 + 31. Address: Bergtal 19, 38640 Goslar.

19-Lachter gallery near Wildemann

The 19-Lachter-Stollen is one of the oldest show mines with still functioning historical mining technology. "Lachter" is an old miner's measure of length. Here you can experience the miners' working conditions up close - narrow, dark and impressive.

Samson mine in St. Andreasberg

The Samson mine is home to the world's last fully functional mine hoist - a mechanical system used to transport miners down into the depths. A technical masterpiece from the 19th century.

Upper Harz Mining Museum Clausthal

If you want to understand history in context, visit the Upper Harz Mining Museum in Clausthal-Zellerfeld. It shows the development of mining from its beginnings to modern times and explains the Upper Harz water management.
