The colourful town in the Harz Mountains with a fairytale castle.
Wernigerode is known as the "colorful town on the Harz" - and rightly so. Over 1,500 colorful half-timbered houses from six centuries characterize the townscape. The town on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains combines medieval charm with vibrant city life.
Wernigerode Castle
Wernigerode Castle towers high above the town with its fairytale silhouette. The castle, which was rebuilt in the 19th century in a historicist style, houses a museum with original rooms - from the banqueting hall to the castle chapel and the count's room. The terrace offers a fantastic view over the old town and the Harz Mountains.
Town hall and market square
The town hall on the market square is one of the most famous half-timbered houses in Germany. Originally built as a playhouse in the 13th century, it has served as the town hall for over 500 years. The carved wooden figures on the façade and the striking double tower make it the most photographed building in the city.
Old town stroll
A stroll through Breite Straße, the historic main axis, leads past colorful half-timbered houses, cozy cafés, small craft stores and Krummel's House - the most crooked house in the city. In the side streets, you will discover hidden courtyards and quaint restaurants.
Starting point for steam train rides
Wernigerode is the main station of the Harz narrow-gauge railroads. From here, steam trains depart for the Brocken and through the Harz Mountains. The historic station itself is well worth a visit.
How to get there
Wernigerode is about 28 km from the Lindnerhof (approx. 35 minutes by car). There are parking garages in the town center, the castle can be reached on foot or by the castle train.
